How New Technology Is Improving Personal Safes
Personal safes can be used to keep precious valuables such as jewelry out of the hands of thieves and intruders, and they can also be used to store important digital data, vital paperwork, and back up records of anything which may prove to be important in the future. These individual safes can be found in many different sizes, from the smallest which are easy to disguise to the ones which are nearly as large as business safes and which will need to be built in to the actual structure of the building, and they can store any kind of material. Modern safes use new digital locking systems, although you can still buy used safes with the old manual combination locks.
The main characteristic of most individual and home safes is that they are used mainly for long term storage. It is rarely necessary to have regular and easy access to a personal safe, unless it contains jewelry which is worn on regular occasions. This means that the best storage location can be chosen, even it is less convenient for access than elsewhere. The best storage place of all for a safe is below ground level, ideally surrounded by concrete. This is because of the extra protection such a location gives you against the risk of fire.
Fire risk is often overlooked by those who concentrate on the possibility of their possessions being stolen, but it is an important factor to consider. A fire in a domestic building can typically spread more quickly than in an office, as there are usually no fire doors and often furniture which is made from highly flammable materials. The safe itself should be able to withstand extreme temperatures and be resistant to burning flames, but there are always limits as to the temperature which can be resisted. Locating the safe intelligently now can save a lot of heartache later.
There have been substantial developments in the entry systems which are used in personal safes over the past ten years, and most of these involve digital technology. Some of the smallest safes still use a common key entry system, but these are so simplistic they can scarcely be called safes at all. Often, they are made to appear as electrical wall sockets, so their value lies in camouflage and not in high security. Larger safes are typically now made with a digital PIN entry system, which is far more secure than the previous mechanical technology as it cannot be reverse engineered.
The latest development in safe technology is that of biometric fingerprinting, which will potentially bring a whole new level of security to the industry. The fingerprint of an individual is unique, so any technology which recognizes fingerprints is virtually impossible to defeat. A potential thief would need a way of duplicating the print of the owner, so the only practical way of penetrating such a safe is the crude way, by physically breaking it. Even this is becoming much harder as the alloys used in safe construction are increasing in strength.
Even these dramatic improvements in the technology used in personal safes will mean nothing unless they are installed to a professional standard. If the potential thief is able to simply remove the safe to work on it later it will not matter how good the entry system is, so always consider the installation of a safe as being one of its most significant components. The safe needs to be as secure as possible, and this can usually be achieved by embedding it into the wall or the concrete used in the basement. The basement will always be the most effective and secure location for personal safes.
